Two people were left homeless when a fire destroyed their East Side apartment building Sunday.
Nilsa Doran, a second-floor tenant, was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center suffering from smoke inhalation and was treated and later released. A third-floor tenant, Mary Martin, made it out of the building safely.
The fire broke out shortly before noon in the three-story building on East Main Street, across from St. Charles School.
When firefighters arrived, there was heavy black smoke and flames shooting from the windows, said Assistant Fire Chief John Currivan.
He said firefighters managed to get the fire under control in about 25 minutes and kept it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Currivan said an old-style gas heater in one of the rooms on the second floor ignited a pile of clothes placed too close to it. He said flames quickly spread up the walls to the third floor.
"The guys did a real good job knocking it down quickly," he said.
The second and third floors suffered heavy smoke and fire damage while water damaged a few stores on the first floor.
