Fire gutted a room in a vacant building in the East End Sunday afternoon. Police reported a fire in a first floor room at 371-377 East Main Street at 3:34 p.m., said Assistant Chief William Haug. The 14-by-16-foot room was engulfed when firefighters arrived, Haug said. They extinguished the flames 12 minutes later, he said. "There's evidence of squatters there," Haug added. The structure is the remaining portion of an apartment building partly demolished a year ago.
