Blaze injures firefighter
BRIDGEPORT - A fire in a furniture shop in the old American Fabrics factory building early Friday led to water and roof damage at the structure, and injured a firefighter. Firefighter Thomas Sansonetti was injured, Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Porzelt said. The nature and severity of his injuries were unavailable Friday. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire broke out in a barrel containing rags inside Harborwood Inc. at 1069 Connecticut Ave. at 12:34 a.m., Porzelt said. The flames burned the roof, and firefighters had to remove 20 feet of it to ventilate the smoke. A malfunctioning sprinkler would not turn off, causing water damage to the furniture in the building, Porzelt said. It took 32 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Fire personnel were recalled at 1:14 a.m., and the last unit left at 3:39 a.m.
