BRIDGEPORT — A small blaze that broke out Monday night in the basement of Julianne Wine & Liquors on Fairfield Avenue caused an estimated $6,000 in damage, a fire official said Tuesday.
Fire Department investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire, which started in the store's basement shortly after 9:30 p.m. as the owner was moving inventory from the old site to a new shop in a building next door. Assistant Fire Chief Fred Haschak said the owner noticed smoke coming from the chimney of the old building, where the furnace was supposed to be shut off.

The owner, whose name was withheld by authorities, then closed the door, ran to a neighboring business and called 911. — AARON LEO
