Family of 5 are homeless after blaze
From the Connecticut Post
BRIDGEPORT - A Fairfield Avenue family of five is temporarily homeless following a fire in their apartment Friday afternoon that officials say is the focus of an investigation. Fire swept thru the second-floor dwelling, one of 24 apartments in a three-story multi-family building at 1610 Fairfield Ave., near Lenox Avenue, at 3:01 p.m. fire officials say, gutting one of the rooms in the apartment. It took firefighters about 23 minutes to put the blaze out.
There was no one home at the time of the firee, Bridgeport Fire Chief Fred Haschak said, and firefighters could not figure out how it started. For that reason, Haschak said fire officials have called in Bridgeport Fire Department's arson investigator Lorenzo Pittman to cull through the debris, talk to occupants of the apartment building and determine what caused the fire.
Haschak said the displaced family had three cats, one of whom dies of smoke inhalation. There were smoke detectors in the apartment and they were working properly, Haschak said. The Red Cross is providing temporary housing for the family.
