Several left homeless after fire

BRIDGEPORT — A porch fire heavily damaged a three-floor, wood-frame house at 229 Spring St. Wednesday afternoon. Several people were left homeless as a result of the fire, which was reported at 12:13 p.m. on a rear porch, according to the Fire Department.

(Bridgeport-WTNH) It didn't take long for a fire to sweep through a multi-family home in Bridgeport. Strong winds fueled the flames, but everyone managed to escape just in the knick of time. Strong winds blew fire through the multi-family home on Spring Street in minutes. "The flames were about four to six feet high," resident Everett Armstrong said. "I've never seen fire spread so fast in my life. From the front to the back in no time." Armstrong didn't have much time to escape his apartment. "I feel very lucky I'm just glad I woke up in time. I was asleep and out of the blue and by a miracle I woke up... or I probably would have been in there and died from smoke inhalation." Everyone in the building escaped without injury. The Red Cross was standing by to provide immediate shelter. The wind started to carry the flames to the house next door. The owner of that house says firefighters did a good job of sparing his home, but he's not sure when he'll be able to return. Selena Whittaker, a mother of three, worries about her family's future. "Where are we going, what's going to happen," she said. "We don't got nothing. We're just, truly like homeless now. That's my concern." The fire leaves two families without a home. They'll stay in a hotel for two nights at Red Cross expense. Six adults and five children lived in that Bridgeport house.
