BRIDGEPORT — A mother and her four children were temporarily homeless Thursday after fire gutted the first floor of their subsidized Trumbull Gardens apartment Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out in 342-A Trumbull Ave. minutes before 4 p.m. when no one was home, said Assistant Fire Chief Dominick Carfi. It was under control by 4:16 p.m. The first floor, containing the kitchen and dining room, was heavily damaged and the second floor had smoke damage, Carfi said. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal Division. It started in the area of the electric stove, Carfi said. The Mid-Fairfield County chapter of the American Red Cross found alternative housing for the family Thursday night. Carfi said the Bridgeport Housing Authority would find another apartment for the family Friday. Two large goldfish on the first floor were unharmed, Carfi said.
