BRIDGEPORT — A midday fire on the third floor of a Laurel Avenue rooming house Thursday left seven people homeless. The Fire Marshal Division was investigating the cause, provisional Assistant Fire Chief Ismael Pomales said Thursday night. Provisional Assistant Chief Robert McLeod responded to the call. The fire broke out about 11 a.m. at 519-521 Laurel Ave., a 2-story wood-frame building. A woman was treated for smoke inhalation, while Firefighter Nancy Petrucelli was treated for exhaustion after the fire, Pomales added. The flames destroyed the third floor, and the other floors had smoke and water damage, according to the mid-Fairfield County chapter of the American Red Cross. The chapter found seven adults temporary housing and gave them grocery vouchers, said Erin Lombardo, the chapter's communications director. Anyone else displaced from the rooming house who was not helped Thursday can call 1-800-319-9935 for assistance. Donations to the chapter's emergency response fund can be sent to 158 Brooklawn Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06604.
