A dog in a cage was burned and another was OK Sunday when a garage fire burned at the home of a Bridgeport police officer who was not present at the time. Fire Chief Bruce Porzelt said arson investigators were called in on the case, as well as the Bridgeport Police Department because one of their own officers owned the home at 320 Vincelette St. The call came in just before 1 p.m. to the 2-story wood-frame Colonial. The fire began in an interior wall of the garage and was confined to the garage and entrance to the basement, he said. Recall was at 1:15 p.m. Two aerial trucks and four engines fought the blaze.

BRIDGEPORT — An East Side apartment house manager is being called a hero today after he pushed a burning plow truck away from the complex. "There is no question his quick thinking prevented serious damage to the building," said Assistant Fire Chief Dominick Carfi. "Many people would have panicked in his situation." The three-story apartment complex at 42 Dean Place suffered minor exterior damage from the blaze. The Ford pickup truck was completely burned out. There were no injuries and apartment residents were evacuated safely, Carfi said. The apartments' manager, Rocco Guarnieri, was using the pickup to plow the day's snowfall from the parking lot behind and under the U-shaped building about 2 p.m. when he began to smell smoke. "There was smoke coming up from underneath the vehicle toward the engine and then it just stopped," he said. "I got out just before it burst into fire." Guarnieri ran to another truck he had parked in the lot and used it to "ram" the burning pickup out from beneath the building and into a snow bank as the flames began to consume the vehicle. As it was, flames had already begun to lick up the sides of the structure, melting the vinyl siding. Guarnieri said he tried to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, but it didn't help much. However, firefighters arriving on the scene quickly managed to douse both the flames on the building's exterior and the burning truck. "Our guys did a great job of getting here quickly despite the weather conditions and kept the fire from spreading through the structure," said Carfi. Apartment residents, who huddled in the small lobby of the building, were allowed to return to their apartments after about 15 minutes.

City warehouse nearly lost to blazeAARON LEO aleo@ctpost.com

BRIDGEPORT — Firefighters extinguished an apparent electrical fire at a Wordin Avenue warehouse Monday afternoon before it could spread to several acetylene tanks stored there. If the tanks had exploded, the building, at 555 Wordin Ave., would have been seriously damaged or destroyed, said Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Porzelt. The business was closed at the time, he said. The cause "appeared to be a faulty microwave that shorted out," he said. Several 911 callers reported black smoke from the business, Enviro Express Inc., about 4:30 p.m., Porzelt said. "The smoke was really black. You couldn't see anything," he said. But firefighters had it under control in about 10 minutes, he added. The fire damaged the microwave and other nearby appliances, and lockers with personal belongings were destroyed, according to Porzelt. The 90-foot-long, two-story cement-block building also housed four trucks containing diesel fuel, which were spared, he added. Firefighters braved the elements battling the blaze. "It's so cold, the water freezes instantly," Porzelt said. The last unit left at 5:45 p.m., the assistant chief said. Firefighters had to cut through a rolling metal door to enter the building, which also sustained fire and smoke damage, Porzelt said.
